Training

For those based in Scotland or the North of England, it is entirely possible to undertake full psychoanalytic training without relocating to London. IOPA offers a regional training route specifically designed for candidates outside the London area; you can find details here.

If you are curious about psychoanalysis but not yet thinking about training, the Introductory Lectures offered through IOPA are an accessible and rewarding place to begin. Delivered online via Zoom by analysts at the forefront of the field, the lectures run across three terms and cover a wide range of psychoanalytic concepts and their application in the consulting room and beyond. Each lecture is followed by a smaller discussion group, and recordings are made available to registered participants.

The lectures can be attended as a full three-term course or as individual terms. Further details and booking can be found here.

For those with some background in psychoanalytic thinking, or who are working in a mental health profession, the Foundation Course offers a deeper and more structured engagement with psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice. It is a good choice both for those considering full training and for those who simply wish to develop their understanding further. The course is held in person in London, with an online option available for those joining from other parts of the country. Further details can be found here.

For those who have completed the Foundation Course and have clinical experience, the Post-Foundation Course offers an opportunity to go further — deepening knowledge of psychoanalytic ideas through clinical seminars, guided reading, and group discussion of key papers. Led by senior analysts and running over two years in a rolling format, it is also open to psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors. As with the Foundation Course, an online option is available for those outside London. Further details can be found here.

IOPA also offers study days and a range of lectures that can be attended online — details of which can be found on the IOPA events page.
